The Origin of Easter
Past:
Easter was the principal festival of the Christian church. Easter is when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on the 3rd day after his crucifixion. The English name “Easter” is much newer, it was derived from the name of the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, Eostre, to whom April is dedicated. The festival of Eostre was celebrated at the vernal equinox, which is when the day and night share the same amount of time. Many Christians decided to name this holiday “Easter” so others could accept Christianity, by mating the name with the old spring celebration.
Present:
Many people still celebrate the resurrection of Jesus by reflecting the Biblical significance of the events that happens throughout the Holy Week. On the other hand, many families stay home and decorate eggs and spend time with their children and other family members. Easter is known for the famous “egg hunts” that occur in this day.
